Box Office Round-up

Back To Black is one of the best-selling albums of all time in the UK, and for the past two weekends it’s been the best-selling film too. Over the weekend it added £1.9m, a drop of 32% from last weekend, which takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £6.4m. It’s clear that this is performing more like Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody, which finished its run with £11.6m, rather than Bob Marley: One Love, which is currently on £17.1m.

Alex Garland’s Civil War stayed in second, adding £1.1m, which takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £3.8m. This is now comfortably Garland’s best performing film to date in the UK & Ireland, having surpassed Ex Machina, which finished with £2.9m.

Kung Fu Panda 4 fell to third, adding £902k, a pretty hefty drop of 49% from last weekend, which takes its total to £18.6m. It’s the second highest grossing Kung Fu Panda film to date and it’s now just less than £2m behind the total of the first Kung Fu Panda’s £20.4m. It’s going to finish with a very similar total.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire fell to fourth, adding £652k, a drop of 45% from last weekend. That takes its total to £12.9m and it is the third highest grossing Godzilla film in the UK & Ireland, behind the 1998 version (£16m) and the 2014 version (£17.2m), and it’s going to finish as the third highest grossing Godzilla film.

On a quiet weekend for new entries, comic-horror Abigail opened in fifth with £597k. This is from the directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, also known as Radio Silence, and this is their fourth horror film in cinemas in the last five years. Unfortunately, Abigail has kicked off with the lowest opening weekend of the four. That title was previously held by 2019’s Ready Or Not, which finished its run with £2m. Since then they’ve directed the two Scream sequels, which grossed £7.6m (2022’s Scream) and £7.8m (2023’s Scream VI).

Outside the top five, Dev Patel’s Monkey Man crossed the £2m mark in eighth and is now up to £2.2m, while Malayalam-language comedy-drama Varshangalkku Shesham added £168k for a new total of £272k.

The Buzz

Trap is the latest mystery from M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, Split, Glass). Josh Hartnett plays a father who takes his teen daughter to a pop concert, where they realise they're at the centre of a dark and sinister event. As usual from M. Night Shyamalan, it will be filled with twists and surprises and will be perfect for brands looking to reach a 16-34 audience in August. It comes just two weeks after Deadpool & Wolverine, and we’re expecting Trap to have a similar percentage of 16-34s in the audience. It’s one of the best films for reaching this audience in 2024 and it hits cinemas on 9 August.

Across The Pond

Alex Garland’s Civil War stayed in the top spot, adding $11.1m for a 10 day total of $44.9m. Abigail opened in second with $10.2m, so we still wait for a big horror breakout hit in 2024. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire fell to third, adding $9.5m, which takes its total to $171.6m. The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare opened with $9m and Spy x Family Code: White opened in fifth with $4.9m.
