Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux and President Pierre Lescure today announced the line-up for next month’s 68th edition.

From the Champs-Elysées they unveiled 44 titles that make up the Competition, Un Certain Regard, Out of Competition and Midnight Screening sections.

Among the competition titles are Gus Van Sant's Sea of Trees, starring Matthew McConaughey and Naomi Watts; 1950’s romantic drama Carol by Todd Haynes, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara; Denis Villeneuve's cartel thriller Sicario with Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin and Emily Blunt; Cannes regular Nanni Moretti's autobiographical drama Mia madre, which co-stars John Turturro and opens Thursday in Italy; and fellow Italian auteur Paolo Sorrentino's second foray into English-language filmmaking, The Early Years, starring Rachel Weisz and Michael Caine.

Cannes will also welcome a number of high-profile features screening out of competition, including the previously-announced premiere of Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, as well as Disney Pixar's latest offering Inside Out and Woody Allen's new flick Irrational Man, starring Emma Stone.

Other films to feature in the 12-day festival will include Amy, Asif Kapadia's documentary about late singer Amy Winehouse in a midnight screening slot, and A Tale of Love and Darkness, the directorial debut of actress Natalie Portman. The festival will open with Standing Tall (La Tete haute), a coming-of-age tale following the life of a problematic young man from French actress-director Emmanuelle Bercot – the first time a female-directed film has opened Cannes since A Man in Love was screened in 1987.

Cannes Film Festival takes place in the French coastal city from May 13 to May 24.
