The Weekend Round-up

Last week’s DCM Tuesdays film, Cinderella opened in the top spot with an impressive £3.8m, which is the fourth highest opening weekend of the year to date. Last year, Maleficent opened with a Friday to Sunday total of £3.8m, but that included 3D, so Cinderella’s start is more impressive.

Home fell to second but had a strong hold, falling just 24% to £2.6m. It has now grossed £9.3m to date and with the Easter holidays to come, it should get well past £15m.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water opened in third with £2.3m, which included £682k from previews.  The first SpongeBob movie opened with £1.3m in 2005, so it’s fair to say the character’s popularity hasn’t changed much in the intervening years.

Get Hard made a solid start, kicking off its stretch with £1.4m, which is the same as Ride Along debuted with in February 2014. Ride Along finished its run with £4.2m.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent completed the top five, falling 49% (once previews are removed) to £1.3m, crossing the £5m mark in the process. It has now banked £5.2m and at the same stage of its run, the first film was on £4m.

Outside of the top five, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel added £432k in sixth and approached the £15m mark. Seventh Son was the only real disappointment, kicking off its run with £412k in seventh and Focus crossed the £7m mark in eighth.

Overall, the box office was up 9% from last weekend and up 19% from the same weekend last year, when the biggest films were Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Muppets Most Wanted, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Non-Stop.

Next Weekend

Fast & Furious 7 is in cinemas on Friday and regardless of how you may feel about the franchise, this seventh instalment is certain to be a huge hit. FF6 set a series best performance of £25.3m and FF7 should have the power to at least match that.

Russell Crowe directs and stars in The Water Diviner. It’s been a big hit in Crowe’s native Australia, grossing over AUD$15m.

Noah Baumbach follows up indie hit, Frances Ha, with the highly rated While We’re Young, which stars Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried.

Teen comedy, The DUFF is in cinemas next Monday. It’s been a solid success in the US, grossing over $32m to date.

The Buzz

Unfriended is in cinemas on 1 May and this intriguing horror, about a group of teens tormented by a dead friend via a chatroom, has been getting decent reviews and currently has a rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. For a slightly older audience, Al Pacino’s latest star vehicle, Danny Collins opened in the US a couple of weeks ago and is slowly increasing its screen count. It so far has a rating of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes and is out in the UK on 29 May.

Across The Pond

Home opened in the top spot with $52.1m, making it a big success for DreamWorks animation. Get Hard opened in second with $33.8m and the audience was 54% male and 61% were 25 years of age or older. The Divergent Series: Insurgent fell 58% to $21.5m and after ten days in cinemas has now grossed $85.9m. Cinderella fell 50% to $17m in fourth and now has a cume of $149.6m. Finally, It Follows completed the top five, adding $3.8m for a solid cume of $4.5m.
