DCM’s Top Films Of 2011

With all the 2012 blockbuster trailers coming out this past week, (if you haven’t yet seen the Prometheus trailer, what have you been waiting for?!) it’s not difficult to get excited about next year’s film slate but at DCM we’ve paused for a minute to reflect on the last twelve months.

There’s been some spectacular cinematic highlights over the past year (has it really been twelve months since The King’s Speech made waves at the UK box office?), so we asked DCM staff to name their top three films of the year. Impacts – February 2011

February impacts 2011

February’s industry impacts totalled a massive 17.2m, which was +15.8% up against February 2010. This is the best February box office result in nine years, and the second best result of all time, behind 2002′s 19m.

Another record broken this year was the month’s total box office; with February generating £112.1m (+19.4% YoY), the highest ever box office result for February of all time and also the first to break past the £100m barrier! Year to date we now stand at 32.5m and up a healthy +10.1% YoY.

Rango lassos UK Box Office top spot

Johnny Depp dominates the big screen again in his new family flick Rango. Opening to a respectable £1.6m on its debut weekend, the animated Western went straight to the top of the UK box office, holding off stiff competition from The Adjustment Bureau and Unknown.

The Adjustment Bureau takes second place, more than doubling the box office takings for Matt Damon’s last thriller Hereafter, grossing a solid £1.4m in its opening weekend. Euro-thriller Unknown followed closely in third place grossing £1.35m, whilst The King’s Speech rises again to fifth place on the back of its recent Academy Awards success.

Paul Storms UK Box Office

Paul

Sci-fi comedy Paul hit UK screens this week, grossing a massive £5.5m (including previews) in its opening weekend. Starring British comedy duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) as two nerds struggling to help one little green man, the film follows them on a road trip that takes them to America’s UFO heartland.

The third instalment of the Big Momma’s House franchise opened to £1.4m (including previews) and American teen sensation Justin Bieber made a splash this weekend with his 3D documentary Never Say Never grossing £821K across 388 cinemas.

King’s Speech takes £4M

The King's Speech

The King’s Speech grossed an amazing £4.4m in its second weekend, up +25% on its opening weekend. The royal drama’s gross to date now stands at £10.8m in the UK, and shows no signs of slowing down.

The Brit-film has now surpassed P.S. I Love You as the highest grossing film distributed by Momentum Pictures. According to IndieLondon.co.uk the incredible performance prompted Xavier Marchand, managing director of [UK distributor] Momentum Pictures, to comment: “We are blown away by the second weekend’s box office for The King’s Speech. Feedback from the cinemas suggests repeat viewing and a broadening of the audiences towards students and teens. [...]
