A black and white French silent film with no big name stars that had somehow become known as the ‘safe’ choice won five awards at the 84th Academy Awards last night. The Artist won the award for best picture, Michel Hazanavicius picked up the best director prize, while Jean Dujardin won the best actor award. It also won for Ludovic Bource’s score and best costume design. The film tied for most awards with another film in thrall to the silent era of film-making, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo 3D. Predominantly filmed here in the UK at Shepperton Studios, Hugo collected five major technical awards including best cinematography (Robert Richardson).

Although George Clooney missed out on the best actor statuette to Jean Dujardin, The Descendants won the award for best adapted screenplay and Woody Allen won his fourth Oscar for best original screenplay for Midnight In Paris. As is his usual stance he was not in person to collect it.

Meryl Streep won her third Oscar, having been nominated a record seventeen times, for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. The remaining acting awards went to Octavia Spencer for best supporting actress in The Help and Christopher Plummer for best supporting actor in Beginners. In doing so, the 82-year-old Plummer became the oldest person to win an Oscar.

As we walk up the red carpet the screams get louder and louder; unfortunately we realise early on this isn’t for us but for a certain George Clooney who is working his fans into a high pitched frenzy. The celeb spotting doesn't stop there, this years 65th British Academy Film Awards was one big celeb-fest.

From Brad Pitt to Meryl Streep and everything in-between this was one of the most impressive BAFTA’s to date. Despite the freezing conditions, the women paraded in their finery (with some carrying it off better than others) while the men looked as dashing as ever (take a bow Mr Fassbender!).

We were lucky enough to get front stall seats allowing a great view point for the stars below (including the amazing Scorsese) and the captivating and engaging Stephen Fry who returned as host and managed to carry the night with great aplomb and some seriously funny one liners.

As we walk up the red carpet the screams get louder and louder; unfortunately we realise early on this isn’t for us but for a certain George Clooney who is working his fans into a high pitched frenzy. The celeb spotting doesn’t stop there, this years 65th British Academy Film Awards was one big celeb-fest.

The evening’s big winner was The Artist, which bagged seven major prizes including best film, best director for Michel Hazanavicius and best actor for Jean Dujardin as well as some very funny acceptance speeches. On the other hand, Meryl Streep won her second BAFTA for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, losing her shoe on the stairs in the process (thankfully the rather gallant Colin Firth reclaimed it and placed it back on her foot – a regular Cinderella moment!)

Best supporting actress went to Octavia Spencer for The Help and best supporting actor went to Christopher Plummer, 82, for Beginners, and in doing so, he became the oldest person to be awarded a BAFTA.

The outstanding British film award went to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and best documentary went to a very well deserving Senna.

For the full run down of winners, please see below. Me? I’m off to recover following an epic after party which still has the live gig from Emeli Sande ringing in my ears…

Awards season is in full bloom as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were handed out last weekend. The big winner of the evening was The Help, which picked up three awards.

Viola Davis,The Help, won best actress beating The Iron Lady Meryl Streep to the gong. While Best Actor favourite George Clooney, The Descendants, was piped to the post by The Artist’s Jean Dujardin.

Things are hotting up between this year’s contenders as each award ceremony throws a different film into the spot light. With The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, The Help, Moneyball, War Horse and The Tree of Life all up for best picture the Oscar race is getting even more interesting.

The London Film Festival is hotting up as another potential award winner causes a stir. Writer and director Alexander Payne’s latest big screen offering comes in the form of the comedy-drama The Descendants.

DCM were down at the BFI festival today to catch the latest flick from the former Oscar winning director (won for Sideways, best adapted Screenplay). This is Payne’s third adaptation from a novel, telling the story of a middle-aged father (George Clooney) who tries to re-connect with his two daughters after his wife has a severe boating accident which leaves her in a coma. Despite the serious plotline, it is predominantly a coming-of-age film, even though the film’s central character happens to be over 50, and follows the father’s struggle to patch together his family whilst also facing the decision to sell off one of the last areas of virgin Hawaiian land, passed down to him from his Hawaiian ancestors.

George Clooney is brilliant playing the unassuming and grieving father who tries hard to become a good parent to his daughters and to provide them with sound advice. When questioned at the BFI London Film Festival Press Screening today about what best piece of advice his father gave him in his life, Mr. Clooney answered simply “don’t mix grain and grape”.

As with real-life, the film perfectly blends together comedy with drama and tragedy, and is of a similar tone to Payne’s past productions (Sideways, About Schmidt).

Combined with a well-crafted screenplay and witty dialogue, there is no wonder why this film has already awards buzz surrounding it. Recommended if you also liked Juno or Little Miss Sunshine, the film will play well to an upmarket and mature audience.

Those of you who would like to catch a glimpse of the man himself, George Clooney will be attending the Centrepiece Gala for the BFI London Film Festival tonight in Leicester Square. The Descendants will release UK-wide on 27th January next year.
