The Vatican may not have wanted anyone to see it but a large number of people did anyway as The Devil Inside topped the weekend’s box office. The found footage exorcism horror grossed an impressive £2m, which is significantly more than the similarly themed Exorcism of Emily Rose (£1.3m) and The Last Exorcism (£1.1m). In second place was the brilliantly funny 21 Jump Street with £1.6m.

In third place, fractionally behind 21 Jump Street, was The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with £1.5m. Easing just 14% from last weekend, this is the fourth £1m plus weekend in a row for the India set comedy and it now has a cume total of £13.9m. In fifth and sixth place were two more new entries, We Bought A Zoo and Contraband.

One notable occurrence over the weekend was The Woman In Black crossing the £20m mark with a further £545k. The period chiller, comfortably the biggest film of the year so far, now has a cume total of £20.5m. Overall, the UK box office was up 6% from last weekend and up 37% from the same weekend last year.

In the US, 21 Jump Street opened to an estimated $35m beating Superbad’s $33.1m to become the highest opening high school comedy ever. The audience was 53% male, which suggests that Channing Tatum probably helped draw more women to the theatre than would otherwise have attended. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax fell 41% to an estimated $22.8m in its third weekend. So far, the animated hit has earned $158.4m. John Carter fell 55% to an estimated $13.5m and it has now earned $53.2m. Will Ferrell’s Spanish-language comedy Casa De Mi Padre debuted in ninth place with an estimated $2.2m despite only playing at 382 locations. Friends with Kids expanded to 640 theatres but fell 26% to an estimated $1.5m. The romantic comedy has now made $4.2m through 10 days.

Disney’s sci-fi fantasy epic, John Carter 3D topped the weekend’s box office with £2m. It’s a decent performance from a film that many had been predicting to fail. The obvious point of comparison is Disney’s last fantasy epic, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which kicked off its cinema run with £1.4m in May 2010. That film went on to gross £8.7m in total. John Carter 3D also had a stronger opening than last year’s fantasy epic, Cowboys and Aliens, which opened to £1.8m in August.

In second place with a further £1.8m was The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Easing just 24% from last weekend this was another strong performance from a film on its third weekend on release and it now has a cume total of £10.9m. In third place with its fifth £1m+ weekend in succession was The Woman In Black. This time around it took £1.1m and on Friday cantered past War Horse to become the highest grossing film in the UK so far this year with a cume total of £19.5m.

In sixth place, The Muppets crossed the £15m mark with a further £667k. This is a fantastic performance, especially considering that no previous Muppets film had taken more than £3.1m at the UK box office. In eighth and ninth place were two new entries, The Raven and Bel Ami. In tenth place The Artist took a further £211k, which saw its cume total cross the £9m mark on its 11th week on release.

Overall, on a weekend of sunny spring like weather the top 15 total was down 21% on last weekend and down 4% from the same weekend last year.

Stateside, The Lorax fell 44% to an estimated $39.1m and has now taken $122m after ten days. John Carter 3D opened to an estimated $30.6m from 3,749 locations. The audience was 63% male and 59% over the age of 25. Project X added an estimated $11.6m for a 10-day total of $40.1m and horror film, Silent House was a new entry in fourth place with an estimated $7m. Safe House eased 32% to an estimated $5m and now has a cume of $115.8m. As you may have read in the press last week, The Woman In Black is now the most successful British horror film of all time. A terrific result for distributor Momentum and the recently revived Hammer Films.

Action comedy This Means War was the highest new entry with £1.8m, although £300k of that came from previews. That result compares very favourably with other star driven action comedies, The Tourist (£1.3m) and Killers (£1.1m). The next new entry, in sixth place, was raucous teen party comedy Project X. Once again utilising the found footage conceit, the film managed a respectable £562k. Just behind was the only other new entry, the Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston comedy Wanderlust, with £491k. Overall, the top 15 total was up on last weekend and up 6% from the same weekend last year.

Across the pond, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax 3D opened to a huge $70.7m, which is comfortably the best opening of the year and the sixth-highest debut ever for an animated movie. Exit polling indicated that parents and children 12 years of age and under represented 68% of the audience. Teen party comedy Project X came in second with an estimated $20.8m. The audience was 58% male 67% under the age of 25. The winner from last weekend Act of Valor fell 44% to $13.7m for a total of $45.2m. Safe House had another solid weekend, ending in fourth place, dropping 34% to $7.2m. The movie has so far made an impressive $108.2m. Best Picture winner The Artist improved 34% to an estimated $3.9m and after 101 days in cinemas has earned $37.1m. The Top 12 grossed an estimated $153.5m, which is up 27% from the same weekend last year.

Emulating the performance of War Horse in January, The Woman In Black managed to top the weekend’s box office for the third successive weekend. It now lies second behind The King’s Speech (£45.7m) in the list of distributor Momentum’s most successful releases.

Hot on the heels of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was the action thriller Safe House with £2.1m. This is the second highest opening ever for a Denzel Washington starring film behind 2007’s American Gangster (£2.6m).

The only other new entry in the top 15 was Katherine Heigl action comedy One For The Money in tenth place with £317k. One notable occurrence over the weekend was War Horse passing the £18m mark.

In the US, Act of Valor stormed to the top spot with $24.5m and the movie’s audience was 71% male and 60% 25 years of age and older. Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds opened in second place with $15.6m. Safe House fell 54% to $10.9m but its $97.6m total means it is now just behind American Gangster and poised to become Denzel Washington’s second-highest-grossing movie ever. The Vow fell 57% to $9.9m but in doing so became the first 2012 movie to pass the $100m mark. The Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston comedy, Wanderlust made a slow start, opening in eighth place with $6.5m. Its audience was 57% female and 61% 30 years of age and older. Finally, the new Amanda Seyfried vehicle, Gone debuted in ninth place with $4.8m. Overall, the Top 12 earned an estimated $115.8m, an increase of 20% from the same weekend last year.
