Shame

The upcoming film Shame signals Michael Fassbender’s arrival as one of the world’s greatest actors, joining the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis and Philip Seymour Hoffman. In the film, out tomorrow, Fassbender plays Brandon, a seemingly normal man, who’s professionally successful, lives an ordered, structured life and has an addiction to sexual gratification.
Few lead performances in recent years have been as fiercely committed as Fassbender is as Brandon. He puts everything, physically and emotionally, on display and exudes an intensity that few other actors working today can match. His co-star Carey Mulligan, is equally as impressive as Brandon’s fragile sibling Sissy. She has much less screen-time than Fassbender but she makes every moment count, particularly during a protracted, tightly framed rendition of New York, New York.
