UK Box Office 7 – 9 December 2012

Like a festive Avengers, Rise Of The Guardians ascended to the top of the box office this weekend easing 19% to £1.6m and a cume of £4.1m, becoming a family favourite. Last December, Puss In Boots opened with £2m, almost exactly the same as Rise Of The Guardians last weekend, and went on to gross £1.3m on its second weekend on its way to a final total of £15.6m. It’s not unreasonable to assume a similar level of performance for ROTG.

Skyfall dropped back to second spot with a further £1.4m, taking its tally to a record breaking £96.3m, smashing the previous record set by Avatar in 2009. It has not just been a success in the UK, it has grossed over $918m worldwide and may well break the $1bn barrier, which is an amazing achievement in itself but even more impressive when you consider that the last and previously highest grossing Bond film, Quantum Of Solace achieved $586m worldwide.

Rock Of Ages

It is still hard to believe but Mamma Mia grossed over £68m at the box office in the UK alone, proving that stage musical adaptations can be BIG business. Since then a number of musicals have been released with varying success – Footloose and the star studded Nine were notable disappointments while Fame outperformed expectations.

This summer it’s the turn of perhaps the highest profile musical release since Mamma MiaRock Of Ages. Since the first performance in Los Angeles in 2006 the stage show has been a huge hit around the world and has been consistently pulling in the punters since its launch in London last summer. Setting itself up as the alternative to Euro 2012, the stars seem to be aligning for a strong run at the box office, as long as the film meets the lofty expectations of fans of the stage show.

UK Box Office – 28 February 2012

Emulating the performance of War Horse in January, The Woman In Black managed to top the weekend’s box office for the third successive weekend. The period chiller grossed a further £2.4m taking its cume to £14.6m, which far outstrips the total gross of recent hit films involving the supernatural including all Paranormal Activity films (Paranormal Activity 2 being the most successful with £11m) and Insidious (£7.1m). It now lies second behind The King’s Speech (£45.7m) in the list of distributor Momentum’s most successful releases.

The weekend’s highest new entry was The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, in second place with £2.2m. Very much aimed at the more mature audience this opening comfortably beat the similarly aimed Ladies In Lavender (£423k), Mrs Henderson Presents (£752k) and Last Orders (£101k). It will have to perform spectacularly though to beat Calendar Girls’ total gross of £20.4m.
